Important Columbia Email Changes for CUMC Affiliates

Columbia email accounts were historically provided by CUIT, the information technology support group based on the Morningside campus. LionMail, an email system powered by Google, was selected a while ago to host Columbia email accounts rather than continuing to use CubMail. Google would not enter into the agreements needed to to provide adequate security for protection of ePHI in compliance with HIPAA regulations and University policies. Due to this, the Columbia Board of Trustees and CUMC senior management have mandated that CUMC faculty, staff, and students use the Exchange email service managed in-house by CUMC IT.

At this point CUMC affiliates are no longer able to store messages and other data in a CubMail account due to its decommissioning. <uni>@columbia.edu addresses can be used as a virtual accounts when automatic forwarding is set to an Exchange (<uni>@cumc.columbia.edu) or other approved institutional address. CUMC IT reached out to departments, schools and individuals prior to removal of any existing data in CubMail with information and options to schedule Exchange account creation and, if needed, migration of messages and other data that was still kept in CubMail accounts or public folders.

Departments, divisions and schools are responsible for requesting Exchange email accounts. For additional information on using CUMC Exchange and the supported email program, Outlook, please see links in the left navigation bar of this page.
